Estimated current
Divides watts by voltage and power factor.
Enter real power in watts, the circuit voltage, and power factor to estimate single-phase current.
For a single-phase AC estimate, amps = watts / (voltage x power factor). At a power factor of 1, watts and volt-amperes are numerically equal.
Divides watts by voltage and power factor.
Shows watts divided by power factor in VA.
Restates the entered power in kW.
To estimate current from real power, divide watts by voltage and power factor. For example, a 1,200 W load at 120 V and power factor 1 draws an estimated 10 A. A lower power factor increases the current required to deliver the same real power.
This page uses a single-phase relationship. Three-phase systems use a different formula that includes the square root of three, so do not reuse this result for a three-phase motor or panel calculation. Voltage must match the supply and the load assumptions used for the scenario.
The arithmetic is not a conductor-sizing or protection decision. Starting current, continuous-load rules, ambient temperature, installation method, conductor material, terminal ratings, derating, local code, and equipment instructions can materially change a real installation. Consult a qualified electrician for electrical work.
| Input | What it means | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Watts | Real power consumed by the load | Use the equipment rating or measured real power. |
| Voltage | Single-phase supply voltage | Confirm nominal and actual supply conditions. |
| Power factor | Ratio of real power to apparent power | Use 1 only for a suitable resistive or specified load. |
| Amps | Estimated line current | Do not use alone to select wiring or breakers. |
Estimate current from a nameplate power value.
Compare current at different voltage or power-factor assumptions.
Check the arithmetic relationship among watts, volts, VA, and amps.
At power factor 1, it is 10 amps: 1,200 divided by 120.
A lower power factor means more apparent power and current are needed for the same real watts.
No. This page uses a single-phase formula; three-phase calculations need the applicable system formula.
No. Circuit design requires equipment data and applicable code rules, so consult a qualified electrician.
