Real power
Multiplies amps, volts, and power factor.
Enter current, voltage, and power factor to estimate single-phase real power and apparent power.
For a single-phase AC estimate, watts = amps x voltage x power factor. Apparent power in VA = amps x voltage.
Multiplies amps, volts, and power factor.
Converts estimated watts to kW.
Shows amps multiplied by volts in VA.
To estimate real power from current, multiply amps by voltage and power factor. At 10 A, 120 V, and power factor 0.8, the estimated real power is 960 W, while apparent power is 1,200 VA.
Watts measure real power; VA measure apparent power. They match only at power factor 1. Motors, transformers, and other inductive equipment can have a lower power factor, and that distinction matters when describing electrical loading.
This calculator is for a single-phase arithmetic estimate. It does not assess starting current, demand factors, wire size, breaker size, voltage drop, heat, harmonics, or code compliance. Confirm actual equipment documentation and consult a qualified electrician before modifying a circuit.
| Input | What it means | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Amps | Current used for the scenario | Use measured or documented current where possible. |
| Voltage | Single-phase voltage | Use the supply voltage relevant to the load. |
| Power factor | Real-power share of apparent power | Use a documented value for non-resistive loads. |
| Watts | Estimated real power | It is not an installation rating. |
Translate a current and voltage rating into estimated real power.
Estimate kW for a documented single-phase scenario.
Compare real and apparent power at different power factors.
At power factor 1, it is 1,200 W. At power factor 0.8, it is 960 W.
Only when power factor is 1. VA is apparent power, while watts are real power.
For a simple DC load, power factor is effectively 1, but confirm the equipment and supply assumptions.
No. Wiring and protection selection require more than this calculation and should be reviewed by a qualified electrician.
